Elephant Ears
April 2023
Oil on canvas, textiles, crochet, sound
I am interested in painting life as well as the abstraction of the human body using oil paint. In considering the body in its entirety as a living, breathing form, I go beyond the external into the internal body organs as I address notions of medicine and its role in body sustainability especially, informed by my own body and experiences with medicine.
Elephant Ears incorporates sculptural and sound elements with a series of oil paintings that break the two-dimensionality of the supports while referencing internal organs of the body. The sculptures are crocheted and sewn, with found textiles to imitate the inside of the body; the sound utilizes my own bodily noises. My process involves working through an intuitive state that helps me connect with my inner self as I paint these various body parts. When I paint, I find myself slipping into a flow state. What is created when I actively tune into my subconscious and enter this state?
